We are seasoned travelers but had always been independent in our planning and excursion of our holiday.
But china was going to be a challenge, mainly because of language, signs written in unreadable script and the fact that we were finishing work, packing a house and then traveling back to australia.
So we decided it was easier to do a tour.
I had emailed with information about what we wanted to do and the dates we wanted to travel.
His quick reply was that there were no group tours going at that time but he gave us the costings to do this on our own with their guide and driver.
There were lots of emails back and forward with changes of dates and inclusions of spots to visit.
This is where i tell you that we were highly impressed with the professional, friendly way that all of our queries were handled.
Michael was prompt with replies and always accommodating with our requests.
We extended our stay, spending about 4 days on our own in a city called lijiang.
Originally this was going to be 2 days and when we extended it ch included an extra nights accommodation at no cost.
While we were in we planned to visit the great wall at badaling.
He said it was further out and would cost more.
But a phone call to ch and the change was made at no extra cost.
Our first stop had been harbin for the ice festival.
Our guide there, mary, was fantastic.
She was so protective of us on the slippery ice, knew so much and shared our excitement.
It was my husbands birthday while we were there and she surprised him with a birthday present.
Our guide in beijing, jeff, was even better than mary, if that was possible.
We were using train travel and he met us on the platform, ready to help us off the train.
He again was attentive and knowledgeable, had a great sense of humour and was a delightful young man.
Again, he went out of his way to help us out and included side trips not included.
He was attentive beyond what we expected, even supplied linament for my sore ankle.
We then moved on to xian to see the terracotta warriors.
We were only here for a day but the standard was still high.
As far as hotels, they were great.
The hotel they booked for our independent stay in lijiang was ideal.
The meals were delicious, lunches included.
We were doing it on our own, without a group to have to comply with but i would do it again.
Initially i was probably like you, scared to part with my dollars over the internet but i was glad we decided to surge ahead.
The information they supplied before departure, the guides and drivers and the followup after we had returned has been very impressive.
They obviously know what westerners expect and they deliver it with professional efficiency.
